Marriage & Couple Counseling St Paul MN
Seeking help is often a difficult step towards realizing a more secure and loving marriage.
Most couples wait on average between 6-7 years after identifying that there is a problem before seeking counseling. Regardless of how long you have waited before seeking professional help, it is never too late.
Destructive and repetitive cycles of conflict, issues of betrayal and mistrust, questions involving one’s sense of feeling loved and the pain of loneliness can change.
Empirically Based Methods
Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) is a proven effective treatment for distressed couples. This approach to marriage counseling gets right to the heart of the matter.
The interactions of distressed couples are characterized by negative cycles where, for example, one partner pursues while the other withdraws. The therapist helps the couple reach for the underlying emotions that keep them stuck in those rigid positions and negative interaction cycles.
EFT focuses on the emotional bond between spouses, recognizing that most relational problems come from a disruption in this bond. By learning to be more open and honest with underlying emotions and needs, couples learn to experience a deeper unity in their relationship.
In EFT research studies, over 70% of couples turned their relationship around (from distressed – no matter how distressed – to happy) in 15 – 20 sessions and over 90% of couples “significantly improved”.
This is the primary model I draw upon and I have completed the advanced level training in it. I also have been trained at the advanced level in the Gottman Method, another research proven approach developed by John Gottman a leading expert and author on relationships.
He has studied over 3,000 couples in the past three decades to discover what makes couples stable and happy.
Selecting a marriage therapist tends to be more complex than finding someone for individual counseling. To assist in your efforts to find the right fit, I invite you to take advantage of a free in-person consultation.
I offer evening appointments to accommodate the work schedules of couples.
